Healthy Medicine Academy Newsletter, December 2010

Happy Holidays, Everyone:

I wish you all a bright, joyful and fulfilling New Year.

Thank you for incorporating Healthy Medicine Academy into your vista. We have many exciting, new plans in store for the upcoming year and all the years following.  Check out our website, www.healthymedicineacademy.com and you will see many new links to click on. These include a Reading List, Library, Conferences, On-Line classes and more. Updates and upgrades are occurring all the time.

The term “Healthy Medicine” speaks to the breadth of the transformation of healthcare that is needed today, so that medicine becomes once again a healthy institution devoted to helping people heal. The term includes the gradual transition towards integrative medicine that is happening throughout the nation. It also embraces the broad economic shifts that are necessary in both medicine and all aspects of local and national life. Finally, it embodies a level of integrity, authenticity, transparency and participation that is lacking today in health care.

Please click HERE to read an article entitled: Towards a New Mainstream in Health Care: Ideas, Thoughts, and Reflections written by Robert Zieve, MD. It will create an image of the impulse we hope to help bring forth, along with many other similar thinkers and doers.

Healthy Medicine Academy

Our online Academy will begin its first classes in February 2011. These will consist of free short lectures, as well as fee-based:

  • lecture classes
  • lecture classes with questions and answers
  • moderated discussion classes on controversial topics that include experts in the field
  • interactive classes that will be participatory once and then available for viewing

Practitioners: There will be on line classes and forums for practitioners furthering your knowledge beyond wherever you are now.

The public will be able to choose from an array of on-line classes to help educate you about “Healthy Medicine.”

There will be moderated discussion groups on controversial topics where you will be able to listen in and ask your own questions to the panel if you choose to.

There will also be classes exploring the political and economic climate in the country today, how to take action if you choose to, and medico-legal classes exploring how to practice in our changing times.

Classes will be available for at most 2 hours at a clip. Some classes will be complete in one 2 hour session, while others may span a number of weeks. We are now in the process of selecting faculty, designing classes, choosing software and preparing our website. We are also in the process of exploring opportunities for offering CMEs.

If you have ideas, thoughts, insights, brainstorms, a class you would like to teach, a class you would like to attend, a teacher you would like to hear, and so on, please contact eve@healthymedicineacademy.com.  The goal is to make www.healthymedicineacademy.com the website that everyone bookmarks and visits to in order to increase their knowledge and education about “Healthy Medicine”.

We are also in the process of building our Academy Online Library and Reading List. These are available to everyone at any time. Thank you very much for contributing your thoughts and ideas to help us build these. Please check out www.healthymedicineacademy.com/readinglist.htm. Although it is still very much a work in progress, you will see many good suggestions on our Reading List. I expect to start filling the Library shortly. If you haven’t sent in your articles and suggestions yet, I encourage you to do so.

Thank you to those of you who signed on to the Healthy Medicine Network, a national meeting place and local healthy building of communities for collaborations and dialogues about innovative health-related topics. The purpose of Healthy Medicine Network is to help build an effective bridge of communication within the format of online networking in health care and on-the-ground local burgeoning efforts to improve and transform health care locally, throughout the country and throughout the world. By building more effective networks of communication that are stronger, with more informed and interconnected people, and encouraging more active and informed participation, more vibrant and healthier communities are the result.

The Healthy Medicine Network website is the second tier of healthy medicine, extending the educational impulse of the academy into broader community networking and active participation. Our plans are to have this website transformed from its current format into a much more expanded and innovative site by Spring.
